THE BROADSTONE (DORSET) GOLF CLUB
THE PREMIER HEATHLAND COURSE IN THE SOUTH OF ENGLAND
South West Counties Championships 2009

wiltshire.jpgThe South West Counties Golf Association held the SW Counties Individual Championship and the English County Championship SW Qualifying Rounds at Broadstone Golf Club during the week of 6th June 2009. This annual meeting is acknowledged to have been the premier inter-counties meeting before the official inter-county championships were inaugurated, and it is still regarded by many to be the finest week of competitive amateur golf in England.

The format is unique, involving the six south western counties of Wiltshire, Gloucester, Somerset, Devon, Cornwall and of course Dorset, each playing the other in a series of matches over five days, with a 36-hole medal on the Tuesday to decide the individual South Western championship.  The medal competition also decides which county shall represent the South Western area in the English County Championship finals. This is determined by the aggregate scores of six players from each of the six counties whose names are nominated prior to the commencement of play.

The winning team for the SWCGA Championship 2009 was Wiltshire for the 3rd year in a row, with a commendable 6-man team score of 841 for 36 holes on the day, of which 8 of the 12 rounds were at SS or better. Wiltshire will go on to represent the SWCGA in the National Finals later this year. For the full results table click here. SWCGA Championship Results SWCGA Championship Results.

The Match Play Shield was won by Gloucestershire, for the 2nd year in a row. For the full results table click here. SWCGA Match Play Results SWCGA Match Play Results

The SWCGA Individual Stroke Play Championship was won by Phil White of Wells, Somerset with a 36 hole score of 134 (rounds of 69 and 65).  For the full results table click here. SWCGA Individual Championship Results SWCGA Individual Championship Results

Finally, the amateur course record for Broadstone was also broken during the Individual competition by Chris Lloyd of The Kendleshire, Gloucestershire, with a superb 63.

It was a terriific week with excellent golf from all of the competitors. Very well organised and managed by the SWCGA officials, ably supported by all the staff at Broadstone Golf Club. We look forward to hosting the event again in the future and wish the Wiltshire team all the best success in the finals.
