The English Women’s Amateur Close Championship was held at Broadstone on 10th to15th May 2010 This wonderfully prestigious event attracted 63 competitors from all over the country from as far as Northumberland, Yorkshire, Norfolk, Lancashire, Gloucester and many more Counties.
The competition started with two qualifying days playing 18 holes stroke play, with the match play stages on Thursday and Friday, culminating with the Final on Saturday morning. The semi final was fought out between Hayley Davis (Ferndown) beating Charlotte Ellis (Minchinhampton) and Tara. Watters (Muswell Hill) beating Hannah Barwood (Knowle).
Saturday dawned bright and sunny when an excellent match enthralled the crowd of spectators with Hayley finally halving the seventeenth to give her the Championship. Hayley, who only celebrated he 17th birthday in February, is one of the youngest ever Champions. This is her first season in playing ladies golf and her first attempt at the Championship. For Tara the result was a second disappointment having been runner up last year.
The EWGA Championship Committee invited Doreen Cooper Broadstone’s Ladies’ Captain to present the magnificent Trophies. Margaret Berriman, the Championship Chairman, thanked the Club’s Manager, Colin Robinson, for his hard work and assistance during the week together with the Broadstone Ladies Section for their volunteered services. They showed their appreciation by presenting the Ladies’ Captain with a carved wooden plaque to commemorate the occasion and a beautiful cut-glass flower vase which they said was to aid the good work of the flower arrangers. Doreen, was also presented with a beautiful bouquet of flowers.
