Update from the Captain
I will start my report this month with my experiences at the very highest level of golf. I was fortunate to be selected from 20,000 applicants to volunteer at the 2014 Ryder Cup. I am sure that my Broadstone Captain role helped with my selection. The 9 day experience inside the ropes was wonderful. I also took every opportunity to promote the ‘Gleneagles of the South’ with the 40,000 per day spectators.
Whilst on the theme of Scottish courses I was disappointed that our General Manager announced that he is returning north of the border. He has left his mark on the golf course and members should be encouraged that the good work he started in 2011 is set to continue.
After remaining unbeaten in Captain/Pro matches for 2 ½ years the record has been broken by Andy Guscott and his partner Simon Willis. Producing a ‘birdie fest’ they won 4 and 3.
Congratulations also to the 5 pairs who beat the 39 points score Neil and I posted in the Captain/Pro challenge.
Neil has confirmed that he is also moving for personal reasons. He will be a great loss to the golf club.
Our Scratch team won their first Beckford Bowl final f or 7 years against the holders, Stoneham Golf Club. A final winning score line of 11 to 4 does not reflect how close many of the matches were. Rob Atherton and his team have played the highest quality golf all summer. We have the best men’s and ladies team in the area. This is something we members can be very proud of.
Our Hardy A team won their final 2 matches of the season to finish as Champions and are promoted to Division 2, where they will rejoin Ferndown and Parkstone. The total points earned of 112, could not be beaten by any teams in the higher divisions either. 21 members contributed to the team’s success. Chris Holmes was nominated player of the year by winning 7 and halving 1 of his 8 matches. Final table and final team photo see below:
I've just been informed today that our Millennium team have done it again! It's the 5th year on the trot we've won the league, congratulations to everyone who played in the matches.
The Chairman and I were delighted to be asked by Paul and Andy from our green keeping staff to make up a team for the BIGGA Golf Trophy Regional qualifier at Parkstone We were even more delighted to be part of the wining team and to qualify for the national finals at Frilford Heath.
