Welcome to another edition of T2G.
Bar & Catering Update
I'm pleased to report that the Club have now appointed our new bar & catering providers. Our new company is Huckleberry's Kitchen which is owned and run by husband and wife team of Russell & Jo Tucker. Russell is a fully qualified and well regarded Chef and at present the company operate two other catering outlets with one of these being the very successful Huckleberry's Cafe & Cake Shop in Ashley Cross. Russell and his team are looking forward to starting at the Club on the 1st of December and they will be in touch with everyone who has an event booked at the Club from the 1st of December onwards to firm up arrangements for their function. I'll come back to you in the next edition of T2G with further information on some of Russell's plans and ideas for the bar & catering at the Club.
Slow Play Survey
I've left the link to the "causes in slow play survey" in place again this week as The GCS is still hopeful of receiving a few more responses The survey has been set up to help identify, what you as golfers feel, are the issues that cause slow play. The survey is available to complete for another few days, once the survey has been closed and all results analysed I will come back to you with the results. This information will hopefully help identify what the main problems are for Clubs to deal with in regards to the slow play issue.
News from the Ladies’ Captain - Jane Best
Good News – Kyra Horlock
Dorset County Girls played for the Ashley Wood (best gross) and Palmer (best net) trophies at Ashley Wood on 6th October. Kyra won the Ashley Wood Trophy last year and again this year – many congratulations.
Kyra qualified earlier this year at Royal Ashdown Forest for the Grand Final of the Faldo Series. This will be the seventeenth Grand Final and will be held at The Greenbrier in West Virginia, USA. Golfers aged 12 to 22 compete over three rounds on the Old White TPC course, at The Greenbrier, between Tuesday 22 - Thursday 24th October. 101 golfers from 19 countries will be competing and our thoughts and best wishes go out to Kyra, we hope she has a fantastic time and enjoys the experience.
Meanwhile, at home, our ladies are preparing to do some heavy lifting………………….of trophies at the Dorset County Ladies AGM on Wednesday! More about our successes in next week’s T2G.
At our monthly Tea and prize giving on Thursday, over 30 ladies enjoyed a lovely tea and took the opportunity to say farewell to some ladies who will not be gracing us with their presence on the golf course again.
June Fender joined Broadstone Golf Club in August 1986 and was Ladies’ Captain in 1993. Shirley Smart also joined in August 1986. We acknowledge the important contribution they have both made to the Ladies’ Section over many years; they have been a great support in so many ways and we thank them most sincerely for all they have done. Unfortunately Shirley was not well enough to attend Tea on Thursday and we send her our love and best wishes. Both June and Shirley received a round of applause from the ladies present at Tea and many stopped to speak to June and to wish her well.
Fortunately Kate Dixon and Marie Delew, although giving up playing membership, will still be gracing us with their presence at social events. Both Kate and Marie play a very active role in supporting the ladies’ events and we are so pleased they will continue to be part of the Section.
News from Club Captain - Allan Hutchins
Please read carefully as action may be required!!
With only one more week before the clocks change it is worth pointing out that the shortest day of the year will be only 55 days away. This year the winter solstice, as it is known, will be on Dec 21st. something to look forward to!
In between time we have the Halloween Quiz night on the 1st Nov. These evenings are always popular and tables are filling up fast so reserve yours now.
After that the excitement of New Years Eve. Our new caterers will be in place by then and we look forward to welcoming them to their first big function. The ticket price of £39.50 will include a three course meal, the brilliant Garry "Elvis" Foley performing the Vegas years and a Disco. Members and guests are invited. Consequently I expect a sell out and I strongly suggest you reserve your table with the office, or on the table plan in the bar, which will hopefully be up by the time you read this!
Fancy a lift?
We are also planning a coach for the New Year’s Eve bash which will pick up and drop off from the following points - Starting at Bournemouth then Westbourne, Penn Hill, Ashley Cross, Barclay's House, Oakdale and Darby's corner. Before I can book this I need to know that we have sufficient interest. The cost for both ways would be £10 per head, a lot cheaper than a taxi! The coach would leave Westbourne at about 6.30pm and Broadstone about 1.00am. If this is something that would be of interest to you, please let me or the office know immediately.
Captain's "Away Day"
Moving on I am planning a "Captain's away day" on Friday 15th of November. I have decided Hayling Island would be an ideal venue as it is fairly close, a great course and not one we play on too often! I have managed to negotiate a very competitive packaged price to include coach both ways, a breakfast on arrival and green fee for £56. This assumes everybody will travel by coach. I anticipate the coach would leave the club about 8.30 to arrive in time for breakfast and tee off about 11.00. Leaving probably about 17.00 Numbers are limited so please let me know by return if you would like to join me on what will hopefully be a great day out! firstname.lastname@example.org
That is all for now and I look forward to hearing from you on the above points.
Weekly Course Report
So much to talk about this week so here goes!
With the arrival of our digger and dumper truck we are now all systems go for this winters projects. Work has already started on the short hole 9b with an astro turf teeing area being constructed. As explained in my last course update this will allow the normal 9th to be played as a par5 whilst a hole is closed and instead of the old 9b being played from the tee mat short of 9th green, this will now be replaced by a new teeing area close to 9th walk off and will again be a par3 down to the old 9th.
Pic above an approximate plan for new 9th par 3 as an extra hole when a hole is closed on course.(markings are approximate)
Whilst on the subject of winter work a date has now been arranged for both the lake clearance and the Gwazae deep aerator machine (link to website). The aerator will be used on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th fairways to help with the problem of poor drainage due to the under surface clay band. To minimize disruption this work been scheduled in together for Tuesday 12th & Wednesday 13th of November.
A lot of work is currently going on tying in dates and planning in timelines etc with regards to further enhancing last winter’s bunker work, not to mention building the new tees on 5 and 6.
This week tree clearance work will begin as part of our ongoing commitment to heathland management in conjunction with Natural England.
The first area that will be tackled will be more scrub and small tree removal to the left of 4th fairway. This will open up a fantastic view of the large area of heathland looking up to the 7th. A tree surgeon will hopefully be on site soon as well to deal with issues of overhanging and low branches now encroaching around the course.
Our bunker sand issue is still being investigated to try and source the perfect sand for our new style bunkers. A few of the popular sand types that are used commonly by golf courses have run out in some quarries and with no guarantee of continuing supplies this is proving even more challenging!
Into next week and unlike this time last year ground conditions are favourable to start work on verti-draining all areas. This work is critical to relieve compaction issues, allow air into the ground and provide better drainage and root development across all areas of the course. Obviously as in previous years a hole will need to be closed, so the staff are frantically trying to get the new hole 9b in play as quick as possible so that we are able to maintain 18 holes of golf.
Weather conditions permitting next week work hopefully will begin with the digger on the new 5th tee. The first job will be to dig out the large pine stumps of the recently felled trees and then start grading the area.
Just as I finish up, you may have noticed the 16th green has been top dressed and over seeded. As was expected, we currently have ideal weather conditions for disease and the 16th green has, during the last week or so, suffered quite an attack. Even though we have been cautious and applied quite a few applications of fungicide since the end of summer the disease has been very strong. Some light scarring has taken place on this green so we have decided to top dress and over seed to ensure that we continue to provide good surfaces, the over-seeding will encourage quick reparatory re-growth to any of the small scars left by the disease.
One final point, it's that time of year when the greens are now a little softer and pitch marks are made more easily, so please spare a few seconds on the green to check for and repair your pitch mark and if you could please repair any others that you come across then it would be most helpful, thank you.
Many thanks for reading my update, back again next week.

Basic Rules of Golf
Captain Allan’s golf ball comes to rest outside a bunker but against a rake. Worried that the ball might roll into the bunker, Allan holds the ball to prevent it from moving while he removes the rake. What is the ruling?
Allan incurs a penalty of one stroke for purposely touching the ball in breach of Rule 18-2a. There is no penalty if a ball moves during the removal of a movable obstruction, like a rake, provided the movement is directly attributable to the removal of the obstruction. The ball must be replaced. See Decision 24-1/4.
Pro Shop News
Well the seasons have turned and autumn has arrived but the course remains in great condition and compared to some of the other courses I have played recently the greens are superb. Congratulations to Martin and his team of Greenkeepers for their hard work over the season presenting us with an outstanding golf course to play on. Well done boys!
Good luck also goes to one of my star pupils, Kyra Horlock, who is currently out in America competing in the finals of The Faldo Junior Series Under 18 Girls Championships. She left us in good form so I’m really hopeful for her. My stable seems in good form recently with Brad Cox also winning both junior and senior championships at Sturminster Marshall breaking the course record! Well done Brad, keep up the hard work. I will be running my lesson offer of 4 x 40 minute lessons for only £100 over the winter months so get booked in now and let’s iron those 2013 faults out and get ready for 2014!!
The shop is now fully stocked with all of your winter golfing needs such as ladies and gents waterproof suits from only £99, bobble hats, mitts, compression tops, winter shoes, lined jumpers and much, much more. The new TaylorMade SLDR Driver remains popular and so too is the new SPEEDBLADE IRON which offers all of the forgiveness of the Rocketbladez iron but is even sweeter on the eye.
The Winter Eclectic will be starting from November 1st and running through until March 31st. Entry as ever is £10 per player and available in the pro shop from NOW!! It will be the same format as last year with ½ handicap allowance and prizes for best net and gross will be awarded. More detailed information will be sent out very shortly.
BARRYS TIP OF THE WEEK
With the ground getting wet and the rough getting particularly heavy here’s a tip to help get the ball out of the rough easier. A lot of this shot is based around set up and ensuring you get as much of the ball first before the long grass. Place the ball further back in your stance, how far back depends on how heavy the lie is. Lean into your left side more than normal, I’d recommend about 70% - 30% in favour of your leg. Both of these set up changes will encourage a much steeper swing and more of a downwards blow into the ball. It stops the club head getting tangled up in the grass and keeps club head speed up. Be careful not to do it with too little loft though as these changed also tend to de-loft the club and you may smother the shot. Hope this helps.
ANDYS JUNIOR UPDATE
The juniors have all recently received a copy of a Junior Newsletter for the 2014 season, if you haven’t yet received or been made aware of this, please check your e-mails or alternatively ask in the professional shop for a copy. The newsletter outlines our plans for the up and coming season of junior golf, both inside and outside the club. It would be great to have a brilliant junior season next year and all at the club are committed to helping us achieve this.
With half term starting Monday 28th October, we have arranged two more junior competitions here at Broadstone;
Junior Stableford, Monday 28th - Tee Time from 10.20am
Junior Medal, Thursday 31st - Tee time from 11.32am
We have reserved a block of tee times for each competition day and would like to get as many juniors as possible play within these designated times. As ever there are prizes up for grabs and birdies to be made!!
On a final note, I would like to wish Kyra Horlock the very best of luck as she heads off to America to compete in the final of the Junior Faldo Series Event. It’s a fabulous achievement to have qualified and we all wish her well in the Grand Final next week!!
Please remeber, we are always looking for new recruits so those members with children or indeed any member who knows someone with young children that may be interested in joining our Saturday morning coaching session please do get in touch or just get them along on a Saturday morning, if needed ring us in the shop for any further information.
That’s all for now.
Look forward to seeing you all soon. Neil and the Pro Shop team.
Senior Section News
Last Tuesday, 15th October we concluded our friendly matches with a victory at home over Brokenhurst Manor. Most matches were very close with most concluded on the last 2 holes but we finished with a good in 4 ½ to 1 ½ followed by a good meal afterwards. It was a most convivial match enjoyed by all and finished in time for us to watch England qualify for the football world cup in Brazil. What more can one ask for?
Seniors Winter Golf
We now dig out the woollies, mitts, hats and wind cheaters for a return to winter golf. All seniors' competitions are open to any Club golfer over the age of 60 so why not enter and join in.
We play a winter league for the KirkmanLong Trophy. Format 4BBB and there is still one vacancy for a pair to join in that competition. This has commenced but there is room for one more pair to join.
The Senior’s eclectic starts on 1 November and concludes on the 28th March.
Monday Roll Up
There is a Senior’s roll up every Monday morning starting around 0920 hrs onwards. For those new to the Club this is an ideal way to meet members and get a friendly game
